My name is Calli Dietrick and I am a current student at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The Elementary School that I am going to do field work for is Blackridge Elementary in Herriman which is actually a few blocks away from my parents house where I currently live. My little brother actually attended this school for a few years when we first moved to Herriman 5, almost 6 years ago. We live by Blackridge reservoir and I would say that the surrounding neighborhood is really nice. There are many churches because it's Utah, so most kids will be LDS and typically, hopefully well mannered and have good behavior, as well as being nice to one another. But there will always be exceptions.
I have requested to work with teachers who teach younger students, K-3rd grade because I think I'll like the younger kids more. But that's why we're doing this! To observe in a classroom, see what all goes on with different teachers/students/ages and environment. How that can change/affect the way the children behave and learn. I can see pros and cons for both teaching younger kids and older ones.
Service learning I think is rather new. I work at an assisted living home in Daybreak and we have a few former teachers living there. I've talked to them about going into the Education career path and how that was one thing that they wished they had more experience and practice with. They said that they did get to student teach either their senior year of college or for the first few months after graduating before they were given their own classroom. But they said that having more time/experience and practice with that would have helped them to be better prepared. So I am really grateful that I live in this day and age where it is required, but it's going to help me a lot to make sure that this is what I want to do and know all the facts before I get through with it.
